For this installment of Artist in Residence we spoke with Carla Triolo. Her project, ‘Rumors’ is currently on display at our NYC Project Space as part of our (212) Impossible Exhibition series.

“A little over a year ago I became obsessed with taking photos and editing them to look nostalgic/vintage. One day I saw a Rainbow Onestep up for sale and decided to make the leap back to analog. It was really through that love of vintage that I looked into instant photography. Of course in my research for film I stumbled across The Impossible Project. It was difficult to get used to at first. For a while there, I thought about giving up on it. But after some practice and more research I finally got the hang of the film, and analog photography in general. I think I threw myself into photography because it felt very therapeutic to me. It gave me the realization that no matter what is going on in life there is always something beautiful surrounding you. Once you realize that you become more aware of your surroundings. Suddenly, you notice a lot more rainbows and see skies you have never seen before, or maybe just never noticed. It’s really a beautiful escape for me.

This past Saturday and Sunday, we hosted another 8×10 Portrait Weekend. In addition to the usual photographs of individuals and couples, this weekend was extra special for Mother’s Day. The event attracted families of all types, with several children surprising their favorite lady with a special portrait session. We also photographed our youngest model to date, at only seven weeks old. Everyone had a lot of fun, and some great memories were captures on Impossible film.

Our next 8×10 Portrait Days are scheduled for June 8th and 9th, and as always, time slots fill up quickly, so give the store a call to reserve your space. We are also now photographing by appointment. So if you are in NYC for a short time only, or are otherwise unable to make our scheduled 8×10 Portrait Days, give the store a call (212-219-3254) to set up an appointment to have you and/or your loved ones captured in this beautiful format. It is an amazing way to commemorate a college or high school graduation!

Running until June 15th 2013, the contest asks you to submit Black & White themed photographs to be judged by Persol’s esteemed jury. Last month a group of instant scavengers took a walk around busy SoHo searching for overlooked treasures. We tried to find the details in the streets and document these often ignored characteristics of one of the busiest cities in the world. Armed with a variety of cameras, we surveyed and snapped over the course of a few hours, finding inspiration in everything from construction equipment to graffiti. We even braved some raindrops to get those final shots. After our cameras were empty, we all came back to Impossible NYC to share the images that we took throughout the day. From April 12th through April 14th, during Month of Photography LA, Impossible will host our first west coast pop-up shop in Urban Outfitters’ Space 15 Twenty. We will have the Impossible essentials available for purchase, plus events all weekend long. The store will be open Friday – Sunday 12-8pm.
