Impossible Reminders: Push! Techniques

As many of you purchased PX 70 Push film as part of our Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, we thought it was the right time to remind everyone of the tips and techniques necessary to get the most out of your Push images.

Push film was our 2nd incarnation of color film for SX-70 cameras. It’s not a true-color film, but instead tends to yield pinkish, bluish and purplish tones.

Push film is slower than the standard 100-speed film that SX-70 cameras were designed for, so Push film needs A LOT OF LIGHT! We don’t recommend shooting Push indoors. Take it outside on a bright, sunny day. In addition to that, turn the exposure wheel/knob all the way to brighten (white) to allow in the maximum amount of light.

Also, heat is Push’s best friend. During development, tuck your Push photos under your arm or put them in a warm pocket. This will bring out better tones and colors…

1) Q: What kind of polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: This is a dangerous question, because I am a collector. I own about 30 Polaroid cameras, all salvaged for around $5 from various yard sales over the past 10 years. Most of them are retired, littered throughout my apartment in some sort of display. But many of them work perfectly. My two favorites are the Spectra Image (which I now shoot exclusively with Impossible Film), and the Land Camera 103. They smell good, they feel good, they are like extensions of my body. If my house were burning down, I’d be the jerk with singed hair and 30 instant cameras around my neck.

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: Instant photography was my first love, and I fell hard. There is something so powerful about making the images in your head exist in the real world, and instant photography has always articulated my personal vision perfectly. As a photographer dedicated to analog means, I will never let go of the physical interaction I have with my cameras and film.

“I am in love with instant film. The instantaneousness of the process, the sound of the film as it spits out, the vintage quality of the color and even the mutations that can occur in development make taking polaroids dear to my heart. Also how each photograph is an object in and of itself makes taking pictures feel like more of a tangible experience. Because of my long time love affair with the film, when Polaroid announced that they were going to stop making the film, I went into what could be defined as an art crisis. It wasn’t until a friend of mine told me about the Impossible Project, that I was able to brighten up.

In honor of the medium, I am in the process of putting together 6 books of my Polaroid photographs that I have taken over the years. I decided to make the books themselves the size of a Polaroid, because that is one of my favorite things about it. The style of the photographs in the books vary from street photography, portraits, landscapes, but they all have that same special vintage look that I love about the film. Matter what the subject matter, I consider each photo a mini visual diary in itself, so I decided to simply categorize the books by places, people, animals, etc…

Hello, Impossibles! Welcome back to 8 Exposures. This week, we turned the spotlight on Long Beach, CA-based photographer Bradley Johnson:

1) Q: What kind of polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: I use them all!…or at least, as many as I can get my hands on! Each camera has its own charm, but there are a few that I prefer more than others. I think that the SX-70 is the quintessential Polaroid camera. It does everything you would want a camera to do, and it uses instant film! My runner up would be the Propack. I know that many of my photographer friends will make fun of me for this, but it produces nice photos, and is relatively compact. I use the close-up, and portrait lens attachments (meant for the Polaroid 250, 360, 450 land cameras) to make it even more versatile. Also, it never has the jamming problem associated with Fuji pack film.

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: First and foremost is the instant feedback. However, with the advent of digital, that isn’t such a novelty anymore. I suppose the real reason I love instant film so much is the fact that each photo is an original work of art. There is no negative. The print you hold in your hand is one of a kind. There will never be another. Sure, you could scan and print a copy, but it will never be the same.

1) Q: What kind of Polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: I have 12 Polaroid cameras (there is no such thing as too many cameras, right?), but the ones I use most are my SLR 680 SE, SX-70, and a Polaroid ColorPack II.

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: I love that it has proved time and time again that the most beautiful or interesting photos aren’t always the ones you planned for or expected.

3) Q: What is your earliest memory of instant film?

A: When I was really young, my grandfather used to take family photos with a Polaroid camera. I can remember waiting, anxious for him to peel back the film and show my cousins and me the photo. (That Polaroid ColorPack II that I mentioned above? That was my grandpa’s camera.)

Photogram Workshop with Patrick Winfield - Recap

This past Sunday, The Impossible Project celebrated the meticulous art of the Instant Photogram with Patrick Winfield ! Although mastering Patrick’s techniques proved to be quite challenging, workshop attendees worked diligently in the pitch dark to craft wonderfully surprising photograms of their favorite objects. After giving an inspiring history of the photogram, Patrick took the class through a series of integral steps in making photograms possible. Using jewelry, toys, cassette tapes, colored filters and many other assorted items, attendees took turns in a blacked-out NYC Space with only a pack of opened film, a flashlight and their newly acquired skills.

As you can see from our blog’s gallery, the results were fantastic! Thank you to all who participated and to Patrick Winfield of course! We hope he returns very soon to lead another workshop filled with more secret techniques.

FRAIL A Photo Art Book By Lia Saile

For Impossible, Lia Sáile is what Ansel Adams was for Polaroid: the in-house photographer. From the beginning of the Impossible era she tested and worked with every single film under development in the factory and integrated the resulting images into her artistic work.

With FRAIL Lia created an expressive photo book, wherein time and its material manifestation through change and transformation as well as the medium analogue instant photography itself are reflected in a manifold way – this and more is carefully woven into the magical poetic imagery by Lia Sáile.

Thomas Jackson's Gold Frame Magic.

We recently discovered a treasure in Impossible Gold Frame photography.

Texas photographer Thomas Jackson has taken breathtaking images using PX 600 Silver Shade UV+ Gold Frame film and PX 680 Color Shade Gold Frame film with the intention of using the images as a holiday promotion. His plan is to mount the signed original images on metallic copper cards and seal them in metallic copper envelopes to send to clients and close friends.

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw Mr. Jackson’s photos, and we can’t think of a more beautiful card to receive in the mail for the holidays.

Impossible @ Rough Trade East Christmas market

Our UK distributors Incognito recently took part in the Rough Trade East Christmas market in London. The legendary record store has a strong connection with instant photography; not only do they have a fascinating archive of Polaroid images from their numerous in store gigs (a selection of which are on permanent display on their front windows) they also have a very popular in store photo booth and hosted the launch of Manic Street Preacher Nicky Wire’s book – a collection of Polaroid images from the band’s 20 year history.

Gina from Incognito and Tom Wright, who leads workshops at the Manchester Impossible Project Space, alongside other Rough Trade concessions Technology Will Save Us, Prick your Finger and Caught by the River spoke to Christmas shoppers at the store and also demonstrated the entire range of Impossible Project films using the Polaroid 600 cameras.

Watch out for Impossible Project workshops at Rough Trade in the New Year and further in store events across the UK in 2012.

The Turtle & The Whale.

We recently announced a new camera kit called the Express Camera PX Kit which features an Express camera, 1 pack of PX 680 film and a Frog Tongue.

We lovingly refer to the Express cameras as the Turtle and the Whale because of their respective green and blue colors. We were delighted to find that our friend Kim Oberski’s daughters Reese (8 years old) and Hannah (6 years old) were inspired to write short stories and draw pictures about the Turtle and the Whale!

1) Q: What kind of Polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: All of them! No, really…I have this thing where I have to try everything. I probably have at least one of every style and format of Polaroid camera, from Spectra and peel-apart cameras to 500 and even I-Zone!

I really enjoy my SLR cameras (several SX-70s and an SLR680) most, but I’ve also built a few home-made cameras including instant pinhole cameras and a custom rubber-coated “Holga-roid.” I also just got a Crown Graphic, which is just fascinating when used with instant film.

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: I was initially drawn to instant photography for the nostalgia.

However, I quickly became hooked on the “instant gratification” and the unpredictable nature of instant photos.

As many of you will be traveling very soon, there are some things to keep in mind when traveling with film, instant or otherwise. If you’re traveling by car, your main concern would be temperature. Don’t leave your film in the car in the hot sun, or if it’s going to be below freezing, don’t leave instant film out overnight.

When flying your main concern will be getting through security. Don’t put film in checked bags as they can be scanned with more powerful X-rays…

Urban Outfitters x Impossible Exhibition Opening Recap.

On Thursday, December 15th, Impossible’s NYC Space hosted an opening event for an exhibition featuring instant artworks by Claire Oring and Foster Huntington. The exhibition celebrates the collaboration between Impossible and Urban Outfitters, long a supporter of Impossible’s mission.

The turnout was fantastic, with guests admiring the photographs on display and enjoying drinks. We also shot plenty of photos ourselves, both digital and Impossible images taken with the new PX 100 UV+ film!

The Urban Outfitters x Impossible Project exhibition will be on display through January 11th, 2012. Please come by the NYC Space to see the art, and be sure to visit your local Urban Outfitters store, where you can now find Impossible film and select camera kits for sale!

To Dry Age or Not to Dry Age: that is the question.

Many of you may have seen or at least heard about our Dry Age Kits. For anyone who is still asking themselves, “What is a Dry Age Kit and why do I need one?” I hope to answer some of your questions.

First of all the Dry Age Kit is all about preservation. As Impossible films are not 100% stable, there is one key factor in getting the frames to ‘cure’ or ‘set’, and that is oxidation. So long as the film is still ‘wet’ from the initial chemical process, it is slowly oxidizing, in the same way that metal rusts…

Impossible Partner Store Barcelona

The lovely people from Chandal opened an Impossible Partner Store in Barcelona on December 16. This shiny, new place, created with the love of many hearts beating united for analog instant photography, is intended to be a landmark in the world of instant photography. Besides all Impossible products and a schedule of workshops, a gallery will host international exhibitions and collaborations with various art centers and photography schools.

The permanent exhibition will feature Impossible Collection pieces from photographers Tim Mantoani, Benjamin Shuster, Pecson Rommel, Dustin Yager and Brandon Long, as well as a curated selection of local artists among them, Roman Yñán and Las Coleccionistas.

Hello again, friends, and welcome back to 8 Exposures! This week we spoke to Britta Hershman

1) Q: What kind of polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: For most of my instant photography, I use my trusty green OneStep Express, aka, the Turtle. Actually, I’m mildly obsessed with all things Italian, so I call it by its Italian name, la Tartaruga. It’s cute, green, and round, and I found it in a thrift shop in Naples, Italy. It was my first instant camera, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I also use a Spectra, a Polaroid 330 for Type 100 peel-apart film, and a Polaroid Land Camera 800 for Type 40 series roll film, nicknamed the Dino because of its impressive size and weight. And also, sadly, because film for it is nearly extinct. It’s difficult to find, and the few films that are left have been expired for decades and are often dried out. So the chances of ending up with actual photos are slim, but once in a while it does happen. And every time it does, I’m reminded of why I love instant photography.

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: It’s a thrill to create tiny but complete works of art with a camera.

Dr. Love's Tips - Swapping Film Doors

Door Swapping: Or, How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Frankenroid…

Several of you have asked about swapping the doors on either your SX-70s or SLR 680s. Some of you either have rollers issues, or in response to the undeveloped patch, are looking to put the door of an older SX-70 onto the body of a 680 in order to help reduce the appearance of the ‘patch’ (SX-70s generally have tighter rollers).

In order to take the door off your camera, first you open your camera, then open the door itself and hold the camera in your right hand with the front facing your left. Make sure you don’t have a pack of film inside! With your left index finger, find the hinge of the door that is furthest from you and apply pressure on the hinge towards yourself. While doing this, pull that side of the door outward…

By popular demand, The Impossible Project is pleased to announce the return of The 600 Workshop at the New York Space. On Sunday, January 15th, the Impossible NYC space will hold a three-hour interactive tutorial on getting the best out of the Polaroid 600 camera and the Impossible film range.

This workshop is designed to explore the full potential and versatility of any Polaroid 600 series camera, including an outline of all the unique accessories and attachments. We will cover in detail all that The Impossible Project film has to offer, including shielding techniques, temperature control and identifying and managing each film type’s unique characteristics.

We’re happy to bring you another entry in our popular instant film question-and-answer series 8 Exposures! This week, we proudly feature UK-based photographer and digital artist Jake Messenger…

1) Q: What kind of Polaroid camera(s) do you use?

A: Many! My favourites are my dad’s old original SX-70, and the SX-70 Sonar which belonged to his business partner. I also use a hefty 600SE; the quality you can get from it is fantastic, but it is a beast to lug about. My lighter pack-film option is a Land Automatic 250. I have a few other cameras knocking about – a Super Shooter, a 600 P, an SX-70 3000. On my shelf there are a couple of beauties for show: I love the 800 roll-film camera. Oh, and I have a pack-film back for my Holga!

2) Q: Why do you like instant photography?

A: I love the ‘thingness’ of instant: how you compose your picture, take it, and within a few minutes you have the physical object in your hand. While I love all kinds of image-making, the immediacy of instant is just magical. I love the fact that the film is its own darkroom, that once the image is there, that’s it – there are no processing decisions to be made.
